The
balaclava or similar hat is listed on most mandatory equipment
lists. Even if not listed it is strongly recommended.
The balaclava is synthetic, very light, does not absorb water and
provides superior warmth. A high percentage of hear loss is
dissipated via the head. Remember the cliche "if your
feet are cold put your hat on". The truth is we use
this simple article of clothing during rest zones when the body
begins to chill from lack of movement, during cold or rainy
weather, even during the ever so popular river crossing. Our
motto - don't leave home without it. |

The
dry bag is often listed on mandatory equipment lists. These
waterproof bags are ideal for carrying the race provided emergency
short wave radio. In addition, we typically carry a pair of
socks, matches, first aid kit, and other essential items.
These bags work fantastic even during river crossings. Many
learn the hard way that zip lock style plastic bags just don't cut
it when it comes to keeping items waterproof. |

During
most spring, summer, or fall races full finger gloves are
generally not necessary. Padded cycling gloves are
sufficient for mt bike legs and full leather gloves work great for
the rope sections. However, we have found that races in
Canada can often have night time temps near freezing. As a
result we carry these polartec fleece gloves with a windstopper
membrane. You can get a pair for under $30. They are
not waterproof but work fantastic during cold night mt bike legs
when the wind chill is bruttle. The leather palms work great
to grip the handlebars. |

A
waterproof/breathable shell is always listed on mandatory gear lists.
At Adventureheads we have done extensive research for lightweight,
breathable, waterproof shells. One of our favorite models is
shown. The shell is from Cabelas and is made of Goretex
Paclite. There are numerous competitive
breathable/waterproof fabrics but we always return to goretex.
This shell is around 20 oz. The key to keeping it light is
the fact that is does not have an internal liner or mesh.
The photo shows the gray inside and the green exterior. It
also comes with a small stuff sack. We find wearing a long
sleeve Coolmax shirt underneath provides great wicking properties
to keep you fairly dry from sweat. |
