Bar 24 Hour - New York City |
2002 Balance Bar 24-Hour Adventure New York
event. We are thrilled to announce that our main event site and finish location has been finalized. Chelsea Piers, on Pier 62 in Manhattan, will host not only our main event site and adventure expo, but teams will be finishing the event at this world-class facility.
For those of you who haven’t seen Chelsea Piers you have to see this place. It opened in 1995 and the facilities are truly world class. Every type of sporting and leisure activity you can imagine happens here. From gymnastics to rock climbing to sailing to golf to ice hockey to swimming to basketball to soccer to baseball and even an extreme inline and skateboarding park, it all happens at this place. But don’t worry…the inline portion of this event will not be traveling through the extreme skate park.
Needless to say we are all thrilled to have this wonderful opportunity to hold the Balance Bar 24-Hour Adventure at Chelsea Piers. Located at 23rd Street and the Hudson River in New York City, it is the ideal location. If you are interested in more information about the location you can check them out at

Gear Boxes
Those of you who have participated in previous Balance Bar 24-Hour Adventure events this year are familiar with the fact that we have been requiring teams to bring gear containers. This allows us to transport gear for teams out on course and set up additional transition areas. Since the option is to have teams carry all this gear with them during the event the gear containers are a great convenience for everyone.
For this event, each team will be required to bring to the event three rubber tubs or “gear containers” along with the other various mandatory gear. These containers will be filled with gear specific to a few disciplines and delivered out onto the course for your team by Race Staff. Teams will be responsible for completing one gear drop during the day on Friday October 4th.
These three containers will be used to hold the following, one capable of holding all your team’s mandatory Mountain Biking gear, less the mountain bikes, one capable of holding all your team’s mandatory Inline Skating and Climbing gear, and the third capable of holding all your teams mandatory Kayaking gear. Your team MUST bring these three containers in order for Race Staff to shuttle your gear for you. If a team does not have these three containers, that team will be required to carry the gear with them. We recommend three of the 31-gallon (117 liter) size containers at a minimum.
Disciplines
The disciplines for the event are set: Inline Skating, Trekking, Ropes, Kayaking, Navigation, and Mountain Biking. Here are some more details about each discipline…
Inline Skating
Between 10 and 12 total miles of roller blading on good road surfaces. That’s one hour for the fast/experienced teams and two hours for the slower ones.
Trekking
Between 17 and 20 miles of trekking over beautiful and tricky terrain. Navigation skills will be key as will the ability to move smoothly and consistently over terrain that can get very technical at times. Fast teams will spend approximately four hours trekking and the slower teams can expect to spend as much as 10 hours trekking.
Ropes
Only descending (rappelling) is planned for the NY event.
Kayaking
As much as 15 miles of kayaking in flat water. Tides and winds will be constant companions of all teams. Fast teams will spend approximately three hours kayaking and the slower teams can expect to spend as much as seven hours in the water.
Mountain Biking
As much as 50 miles of riding over varied terrain. Teams will be riding on everything from roads to jeep trails, to some of the more technical and exciting single track trails you’ve ever been on. Fast teams will spend approximately four to five hours riding and the slower teams can expect to spend as many as 10 to 12 hours on bikes.
Navigation
As is always the case, this is the backbone of your performance. Screw up with the map and compass and your team has troubles. Please make a point of working on this discipline just as much as you ride, run and paddle. Remember that the fast teams make huge time gains due to their navigational skills. As a team we recommend that you practice route finding, decision-making and moving consistently. Learn to trust your skills and communicate constantly as a team.
Timeframe
Please remember that this event is expected to take the first teams about 14 hours. This means some teams will be out on the course for as many as 32 to 36 hours. It is standard with these times in place that the bulk of participants will complete the event between 20 and 26 hours. Please take advantage now of the chance to plan and prepare for spending this amount of time on the racecourse. As a team, train your bodies to carry weight, eat, drink, and make intelligent decision for this period of time. Come race weekend you will be glad you did.
