Details
First Adventure Race for Tom. Frank (old soccer buddy from UB
turned Tom onto AR). The idea was that Tom would be the support
crew to learn what AR is all about. Tom had minor surgery 1
month prior to the race. Tom felt it would be no problem
since he was to act as support crew. Tom could not workout
due to the surgery. Tom was very nervous of the bike distance even
with his big road cycling experience. Last minute Frank asked if
Tom could race because one of their teammates dropped out. After
massive contemplation, Tom decided to "GO FOR IT".
Looking back as a team we did OK. The start night conditions were
frigid, air temp about 32 degrees F and water temps also 32
degrees F. Sat night cold wet canoe. Massive ice buildup on
thighs from kayak paddle slop. We decided to beech the
canoes, build a fire, warm up and continue at dawn. We slept
about 2hrs. Missed time cutoff by about 2 hours. Decided to
continue as far as we could. The race organizers would not
allow us to do the much anticipated zip lines. During the
final bike section Glenn major sick & bonk. Used radio, got
picked up @ 34hrs. Quite an experience for Tom's first
AR. To say the least he was hooked and the lifestyle of AR
began. |
