Adventure
Racing is best described as a continuous, multi-discipline, team event in
the rugged outdoors. Kind of like a wilderness triathlon.
There are many variations but typically teams consist of 4 members, often
coed, but not always. The team always stays together and the first
team to cross the finish line in the shortest period of time wins.
The most common disciplines in Adventure Races are mountain biking,
hiking, paddling, and various rope work. The biggest differentiator
in any race is a team's ability to navigate an unmarked course solely by
map and compass. Successful teams have learned the best route to win
is not necessarily a straight line. The actual race course is
typically in remote wilderness areas far from any human habitats.
The length of races range, but typical races are 8 hours, 36 hours, and
multi-day races. The distances are not for the light
hearted. In a typical 36 hour race teams often cover 100 miles
continuously throughout the night without any sleep. A longer
expedition style race can be 250 miles. Successful teams will
complete these longer distances in approximately 5-6 days with only a
single hour of sleep each day
